Again demonstrating why they are the top team in college football, the University of Georgia Bulldogs won. Georgia thrashed Texas Christian University 65-7 in the national championship game with an uncompromising and overwhelming performance to go undefeated and win the title again.
Georgia scored 65 points, which is a record for a (BCS/College Football Playoff) championship game.
The team had no response for Georgia when TCU entered the game as a heavy underdog. Following the kickoff, Georgia stopped TCU's opening drive, and senior quarterback Stetson Bennett then scored the game's first touchdown on a 21-yard run. In less than three minutes, the Bulldogs sliced through the TCU defense as they marched down the field. It was a sign of things to come.
On the Horned Frogs' subsequent offensive drive, UGA forced a fumble, and the turnover resulted in another Georgia score, a 24-yard field goal to make it 10-0 midway through the first quarter.
However, third-placed TCU responded on the following drive. Horned Frogs quarterback Max Duggan led his team 75 yards for a touchdown. Duggan, the Heisman runner-up, scored on the ground to trim the Georgia quarterback's lead to 10-7. TCU would score just one point the whole game.
Georgia immediately answered by extending the lead to 17-7 on a Bennett touchdown pass of 37 yards. When TCU's next series was stopped by the Bulldog defense, Georgia scored another rushing touchdown by Stetson Bennett to lead 24-7 at the half.
Before halftime, a Duggan interception resulted in another Bulldog touchdown.
Georgia scored on each of its six possessions to simply dominate and led 38-7 at the half (the first team to do that in the playoffs). In the first half, the Bulldogs amassed 354 yards of offense and averaged 9 yards per play.
TCU got the second half off to a good start by forcing a punt from Georgia. The Bulldogs continued where they left off, as Bennett threw another touchdown pass to increase the score to 45-7. However, the Horned Frog offense was once again thwarted.
The third quarter was almost over when there were 11 minutes left in the game.
Stetson Bennett, the quarterback for the Bulldogs, would score six touchdowns (two rushings and four passing) before being replaced 95 seconds into the fourth quarter.
Georgia, the current national champions, entered the game unbeaten (14-0). Georgia dominated the Southeastern Conference, the strongest conference in college football, under Bennett (a former walk-on quarterback). For most of the season, Georgia was rated first.
With around 12,000 students, Texas Christian University is a private institution in Fort Worth, Texas. It had a 13-1 record and was the Big 12 Conference champion when it entered the championship game. TCU was projected to finish seventh in the league and was a 200-to-1 long chance to win the championship before the season even started. However, the Horned Frogs' ability to win during the entire season shocked throngs of football fans. In the most crucial game of the year, they were unable to defeat Georgia.
In Division I FBS college football, the Southeastern Conference has dominated the playoffs. An SEC club has won the championship six times since the CFP started in 2014 overall. In the CFP era, no team had ever won the national championship twice before Georgia.
One renowned Bulldog was unable to attend the triumph. Uga X, Georgia's well-known mascot, did not go to southern California for the championship match. The bulldog is a regular sight at Georgia games, donning a UGA uniform and relaxing on the sidelines in an air-conditioned doghouse. The 9-year-old bulldog's owners told WTOC television that the cross-country travel would have been too challenging for him.
